A grand sacred peepal tree stretches wide, offering quiet refuge to those visiting Naina Devi Temple. Facing it stands Lord Hanuman, ever watchful. Inside the sanctum, three divine forms reside- at the center, two eyes symbolize Naina Devi; on the left is Mata Kali Devi, on the right, Lord Ganesha. The sanctum’s heart, dedicated to Maa Naina Devi, is gracefully guarded by two lion statues, embodying strength, protection, and divine presence.

Naina Devi Temple Mythology

Nestled among the sacred and divine 51 Shakti peeths, the Naina Devi Temple holds deep historical and spiritual significance in Hindu scriptures. It is believed that the eyes of Goddess Sati fell at this sacred spot while Lord Shiva carried her charred body across the heavens. Here, the divine is worshipped in the symbolic form of eyes, honoring the eternal presence of the Goddess at the hallowed ground.

Naina Devi Temple History

The history and religious significance of Naina Devi Temple dates back to the Kushan period. At first constructed in the 15th century AD, the temple became famous after Moti Ram Shah placed the idol of Maa Naina Devi there in 1842. In the year 1880, a huge landslide leveled the temple to the ground. Owing to the dedication of the locals, the temple was rebuilt in 1883 as a sign of their endless devotion to Maa Naina Devi.

Festivals and Events in Naina Devi Temple

During Nanda Ashtami, people organise a big fair at the temple and gather to get blessings. The festival takes place for 8 days right at the Naina Devi temple. On the last day, the statue of Goddess Nanda Devi, along with her sister Naini Devi, is submerged in water during a ceremony. Other ceremonies like Navratri and Chaitra Fair attract a large group of visitors to the Naina Devi temple.
